Project Engineer

Position Summary
The Project Engineer supports the successful execution of construction projects by coordinating technical activities, managing documentation, and facilitating communication between field operations, subcontractors, vendors, clients, and project management teams. This position helps ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company quality standards. This role may require travel to project sites throughout Iowa and Illinois.
Key Responsibilities
The key functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist Project Managers with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination activities.
- Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, architects, engineers, inspectors, and internal teams to support timely project execution.
- Track project milestones, maintain progress updates, and communicate status reports to leadership.
- Manage and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes, drawings, permits, and other project documentation.
- Maintain accurate records within project management software systems such as Procore and Bluebeam.
- Support procurement activities, including material ordering, equipment scheduling, and delivery tracking.
- Assist with project cost tracking, budgeting support, and invoice review.
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents to support field operations.
- Conduct site visits and inspections to monitor quality, progress, and safety compliance.
- Participate in safety meetings and help enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards.
- Collaborate with field personnel and design professionals to resolve technical or construction-related issues.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and maintain professional knowledge of construction practices and regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Construction Engineering, Architecture, or related field preferred; equivalent construction industry experience may be considered.
- Experience in commercial or industrial construction, project engineering, or project coordination preferred.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, scheduling, documentation, and safety requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software such as Procore and Bluebeam.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Valid driver’s license with ability to travel to project sites.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- This position regularly works in both office and active construction site environments.
- Employee may be exposed to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, dust, noise, vibration, and uneven terrain while visiting job sites.
- Frequent walking on construction sites, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and standing for extended periods may be required.
- Must be able to safely lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 25 pounds frequently.
- Regular use of computers, tablets, mobile devices, printers, and standard office equipment is required.
- May be required to operate or work around construction equipment, power tools, and machinery in accordance with company safety policies and training.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toed boots, is required on job sites.
- Must be able to maintain regular attendance and work schedules as required to meet project demands.

Position Summary
The Construction Superintendent is responsible for the overall field supervision, coordination, and execution of assigned construction projects for Bruce Builders. This position ensures that all work is performed in strict compliance with project specifications, contractual obligations, applicable federal, state, and local laws, and Bruce Builders’ safety and quality standards.
The Superintendent serves as the Company’s on-site representative and is accountable for maintaining a safe, compliant, and productive work environment while delivering projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
The key functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Direct and supervise all on-site construction activities, including Bruce Builders employees, subcontractors, and vendors
- Enforce compliance with all applicable safety regulations, including but not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, Illinois and Iowa safety requirements, and Bruce Builders’ internal safety policies
- Conduct and document daily jobsite safety inspections, toolbox talks, and incident reporting
- Maintain full responsibility for jobsite safety; stop work authority must be exercised when unsafe conditions exist
- Coordinate and sequence all trades to maintain project schedule and workflow efficiency
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, and contracts to ensure accurate execution
- Identify and proactively resolve field conflicts, design discrepancies, and constructability issues
- Maintain project schedule adherence and provide regular updates to the Project Manager
- Ensure all required permits, inspections, and approvals are obtained and documented in compliance with Iowa and Illinois regulations
- Maintain accurate and complete daily reports, including labor, progress, delays, safety incidents, and site conditions
- Manage site logistics, including deliveries, equipment utilization, staging, and site security
- Communicate professionally with clients, inspectors, engineers, and internal stakeholders
- Monitor subcontractor performance for compliance with contractual scope, safety, and quality expectations
- Enforce company policies, including drug-free workplace, harassment prevention, and equal employment requirements
- Support audits, investigations, or regulatory inspections as required
- Ensure strict adherence to all applicable laws, including but not limited to:
- OSHA standards and recordkeeping requirements
- Iowa and Illinois building codes and inspection requirements
- Illinois jobsite notice and posting requirements (including safety and employment notices)
- Applicable wage and hour compliance for field operations (in coordination with management)
- Immediately report any workplace injuries, safety violations, or regulatory inquiries to management
- Cooperate fully in any company or governmental investigation
Qualifications
- Minimum 5–10 years of progressive experience in construction supervision (commercial and/or industrial preferred)
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-trade construction projects
- Strong working knowledge of construction methods, scheduling, and safety compliance
- OSHA 30 certification strongly preferred (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
- Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore or equivalent)
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between job sites in Iowa and Illinois

- Strong leadership and accountability for jobsite performance
- Advanced knowledge of construction sequencing and trade coordination
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and legal contract documents
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making under field conditions
